The Jessi Combs Lamp is in the shape of a truncated icosahedron with a diameter of about a foot. The outside is constructed of 32 panels of sanded ply (12 regular pentagons and 20 regular hexagons, one serving as the base) held together by 3D printed connectors and screws. Painted red with several layers of polyurethane for protection and vellum for the polka dots. The icosahedron sits on top of a base containing the light fixture. I like designing lamps in complex shapes, especially those derived from Archimedean solids. The idea of turning the shape into a lamp to support Jessi’s foundation started after I purchased the leather framed portrait of her created by her good friend, Tamara Robertson. I never had the pleasure of meeting Jessi, but have always been inspired by her drive as an artist and maker. I have plans on creating smaller versions of this lamp to sell on a regular basis to support Jessi’s foundation.
